Philanthropy
"To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied.”
Alpha Gamma Delta was the first women's fraternity to declare an official philanthropy: the Alpha Gamma Delta Camp for underprivileged children opened in 1919. It was later closed in 1947 but the focus on children has not been forgotten. Since 1979, Alpha Gams pledge their time, energy and donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
Juvenile diabetes is also known as Type I diabetes mellitus, or insulin-dependent diabetes. It most commonly afflicts patients in their pre-adolescent youth. It arises as an autoimmune disease. For reasons that biomedical researchers are still unsure of, the child's own immune system thinks that the islet cells of the pancreas are foreign and fight against them as if they were a bacteria or virus.
Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation supports new research to find a cure for JDF. There are also special camperships which the Trust funds. Each year, the Foundation donates money to unique camps for young diabetics who can't afford to go. At camp, the children learn about their disease, learn to cope with injecting their insulin independently, but mostly have summer fun and play camping games like normal children.
More about Diabetes...
Alpha Gamma Delta’s current philanthropic focus is diabetes. Educate yourself and find out how you can become actively involved in its prevention and cure.
What is Diabetes?
The food we eat acts as energy fuel for our system. Once digested, the food is turned into sugars or glucose. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies to produce energy. When you have diabetes, your body either does not make enough insulin or can not use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in your blood. Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst; unexplained weight loss, extreme hunger, sudden vision changes, tingling or numbness in hands or feet, feeling very tired much of the time, very dry skin, sores that are slow to heal and more infections than usual.
Controlling Diabetes
While some will need the use of insulin or oral agents (prescribed by a physician), many will be able to utilize healthy habits to control their diabetes.
Weight Control—Attain and maintain the body weight recommended by your physician or Registered Dietitian.
Nutrition—Eat a well-balanced diet, limiting saturated and animal sources of fat as much as possible.
Exercise—A regular program should be done at least three to four times a week
Smoking—Smoking is a significant risk factor. Quitting can improve your overall health.
Pacesetters—Mall-Walking Program
Exercise has many health benefits for persons with diabetes. Along with improving blood sugar control and reducing insulin requirements, exercise also improves heart, blood vessel and lung function.
Alpha Gamma Delta, the Center for Disease Control and the National Diabetes Education Program have partnered to create and implement a mall-walking program called Pacesetters in local communities, which encourages people of all ages to exercise.
Teeter-Totter-A-Thon
Every spring Kappa Gamma chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta holds a Teeter Totter-A-Thon. We teeter totter for 24 hours raising donations from passerbys and local businesses!
This spring we raised $2,210.47 for the AGD foundation.
Diabetes Walk
Each fall we hold a walk for diabetes. We raise donations as we walk along the Corpus Christi Bay fighting diabetes one step at a time! Even our dogs come!
Relay for Life
This past year our chapter participated in Relay for Life. A 12 hour relay run/walk to help raise money to fight cancer! We had a blast, dressing up to the theme of super heroes!
**We also participate in breast cancer awareness programs, local beach clean-ups, MS walks and volunteer around Corpus Christi.
Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation
